Rotating Social Groups
CBS has a robust history of creating vibrant social opportunities, offered exclusively to children receiving services in our center. Groups and social blocks are updated often based on shared goals. Check out a history of offerings throughout various CBS sessions.
CBS Social Group (currently in rotation)
This group is designed for our earliest learners and focuses on teaching the skills necessary to learn and play in the same environment as others. Most children in this group come from a 1:1 learning environment, and this is often their first experience engaging with peers in this way. The group focuses on kindergarten readiness skills such as appropriate toy play, completing crafts, playing with peers, singing songs, engaging with sensory materials, transitioning between activities, circle time routines, gross motor activities, fine motor strength and control tasks, following instructions, and independent play skills. This group also spends a portion of each session learning swim targets alongside these early learner skills.

Little Movers Social Group (LMSG)
Little Movers Social Group (LMSG) is designed for our earliest learners and focuses on teaching necessary skills through play. This group is extremely active and always on the move. LMSG has an emphasis in social interaction and collaborative learning. This group enhances skills that are essential for our little one’s as they transition from toddlers to young children. Such skills include, but are not limited to, appropriate toy play, completing crafts, playing with peers, singing songs, engaging with sensory materials, transitioning between activities, gross motor activities, fine motor strength, following instructions and independent play. These Little Movers will also spend a portion of each group session learning swim targets along with these early learner skills.
Multidisciplinary, Applied, Practice, Social (MAPS) Group
This group is designed for school-age children who have some experience in a school setting or who will be transitioning into a school setting as the next step in their journey. The primary focus of MAPS is to increase independence during structured activities and to build the stamina and tolerance that is required to be successful in a learning environment. Skills taught during this group include self-advocacy and strategies to be successful in an academic setting, organized play, swimming, following a structured routine, communication, increasing independence during work times, collaborating with peers, ball sports, and collaborative play.
Interdependence Social Group (ISG)
This group is generally designed for our upper school-age learners. The focus of this group is collaborating with peers to problem solve to a solution through the following activities: organized sports, swimming, farm chores, outdoor play, music and art activities, and team-centered tasks. These skills are supplemented with other school-aged tasks, such as group work, research, computer skills, reports, speeches, theater productions, and more. Work is done in both large and small groups to promote generalization of skills. The children in ISG oftentimes play an active role in the planning and implementation of group activities as well.
Epic Quest Adventuring Group
This group is designed for older learners who have a foundation in language and social skills. The focus of this group will be development of advanced skills in areas that include creative problem solving, communication, teamwork, social awareness, and imaginative storytelling. These skills will be tested and developed during on going table top role playing games in which learners will go on imagined adventures and work together to overcome obstacles that will mirror real life challenges in a safe and fun play setting. These skills will also be supplemented in peripheral game activities which may include creative writing, arts and crafts, and outdoor play. A portion of the end of each group session will also be devoted to practicing swim skills.
Relationship Development Social Group (RDSG)
This group can include a wide range of children in terms of age and ability level. The focus of this group is to help children create and maintain meaningful social relationships through interactions with their peers. The skills focused on in this group include reading nonverbal cues, effective communication skills, identifying and regulating emotions, problem-solving, and collaborating with peers. RDSG is conducted with as minimal adult interference as possible to encourage the children to seek guidance and support from each other. Swimming skills are also practiced in this group where each child’s goals are set and practiced at an individual level.
